Administrative status: the city of Pärnu is the centre of the county and an independet unit of local authoriy.
Pärnu is an economic centre located in South-West Estonia on the shores of the Gulf of Pärnu with an area of 32 km2 and a
population number of about 43,600. Pärnu has become known as a summer and resort city. Since 1996,
Pärnu holds the title of Estonia’s Summer Capital and in 2006 the new beach promenade was opened to grandly
celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Summer Capital.
At the end of 2004, UNICEF awarded Pärnu the title of Child- and Youth-Friendly City.
The title means that Pärnu values working with children and the youth and that they are a target group
who must be granted the best self-realization opportunities and a safe living environment.
At the beginning of 2006, the World Health Organization designated Pärnu as a full member of phase
IV of the Healthy Cities Network. Essentially, it means recognition for having participated in the organization’s work.
It also entails the possibility to play a more active role in the communication network and exchange of experience between
the European Healthy Cities. The City of Pärnu wants to be a city promoting healthy lifestyles and ensuring good health for its residents and visitors.
