Since 1996, Pärnu holds the title of Estonia’s Summer Capital and in 2006 the new beach promenade was opened to grandly celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Summer Capital.

At the end of 2004, UNICEF awarded Pärnu the title of Child- and Youth-Friendly City. The title means that Pärnu values working with children and the youth and that they are a target group who must be granted the best self-realization opportunities and a safe living environment.

At the beginning of 2006, the World Health Organization designated Pärnu as a full member of phase IV of the Healthy Cities Network. Essentially, it means recognition for having participated in the organization’s work. It also entails the possibility to play a more active role in the communication network and exchange of experience between the European Healthy Cities. The City of Pärnu wants to be a city promoting healthy lifestyles and ensuring good health for its residents and visitors.
